Charlotte Langley has had the amazing opportunity to have her MOC added to the Showcase inside the Metrocentre in Newcastle.
Here is Charli’s story and what inspired her:
LEGO celebrates individuality, diversity & inclusion. Advocating for building the future & learning through play, valuing people’s backgrounds & cultures. In their minifigure range they have represented different disabilities, their Friends sets in particular focus on disability in both people & animals.
It’s a very empowering thing to see, when mainstream toys and companies embrace representing different disabilities. Being a disabled builder myself, I wanted to create some MOCs with a focus on inclusion, celebrating the aids which help make life easier for us.
So far, I have built a brick-built wheelchair, crutches & sunflower lanyard; the lanyard in particular is a crowd favourite! I have other designs being created, including a rollator & hearing aid. My aim through building these is to spread more awareness of different disabilities, get conversations started about how different conditions affect people differently, increasing the representation of disability and celebrating the aids which help empower people to live their lives!
These builds have received a lot of positive attention already, from people with both visible and non-visible disabilities. With knowledge, understanding and representation we can create a more inclusive & accepting society
